‘ENCOURAGE MORE WOMEN INTO POLITICS’-FATIMATU ABUBAKAR
The Deputy
Communications Director at the Office of the President of Ghana, Fatimatu
Abubakar, has advised that more women should be involved in politics for the
betterment of national development. She believed that if more women are into
politics, there will be a total transformation of women’s progress living in
developing countries.
An event which
was held at the Accra International Conference Centre and organized by the
Initiative for Youth Development which served a purpose of empowering young
Zongo women for community and national development. Madam Abubakar who was a
speaker at the event urged most young Muslim women to take advantage of
opportunities and make good use of it irrespective of their religion, gender
and social status.
She further stated that; “If more
credible women are into politics, they are able to make a difference and not
just add to the numbers”.
However, the
patriarchal nature of most African countries has made women to consider
themselves as inferior. Some women who live in democratic countries where rules
are confined in the constitution are very few in politics.
Nevertheless,
these few credible women who have gone beyond borders to make a difference and
press for progress in their communities and nation at large are often
characterized as fragile, incompetent and promiscuous. These general rumours
have hindered the potentials of most women who are willing to participate in
politics.
The structures
within the political sphere have its own challenges and women involved have
their own personal stories to tell. Living in the 21st century where
women are developing their skills in different professions, if more women are
engaged in politics, there will be a total transformation and progress in
national development. Women involved in politics will be able to give their own
perspective on national issues that will render solution to affected women in
the society.
She also encouraged young women who
would want to be into politics to acquire knowledge and be trustworthy in the
political sphere. She stated women engaged in politics will be able to exercise
good discretion in terms of national issues in relation to corruption.
“Eventhough, it is a tough terrain but it is smoother for those who have
knowledge and be able to exercise good discretion irrespective of their
religion, tribe and social status” she added.
Fatimatu Abubakar is a member of the
New Patriotic Party (NPP) Communications team. She was a campaign aide to the
President during the 2016 general election. She holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree
in Psychology and English Language from the University of Ghana. Due to her intelligence
and competence in the political arena, she was appointed by the President of
the Republic of Ghana Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo Addo as the Deputy Communications
Director at the Office of the President.
